The Haute Vienne is famous for its vast expanses of Chestnut and Oak
forests and its profuse and diverse wildlife and has consequently been
designated as part of France's newest Parc Regionale. Whilst the area
provides the perfect setting for a summer holiday it is also
particularly beautiful in Spring and Autumn when the changing colours of
the seasons are a photographers dream.
The nearest towns are Rochechouart, Oradour-sur-Vayres and Vayres,
whilst Limoges noted for its fine Porcelain, Angoulême, Cognac,
Confolens famous for its August festival celebrating music and dance
from around the world and Futuroscope (near Poitiers), are all easily
accessible.
The area is renowned for its beautiful lakes, quiet villages (except
on market and fete days), excellent cuisine, woodland trails and
numerous chateaux, (the route taken by Richard the Lionheart is
carefully documented and culminates at Chalus where he was fatally
wounded). It is therefore ideal for anyone who enjoys walking, fishing,
bird watching, watersports and cycling. A two week holiday fishing
licence is available for €23 approx.
The nearest large lakes are at Rochechouart, St Mathieu and Vidiex
and are all within a 5 - 20 minute drive of Les Brégères. All have man
made beaches and offer safe swimming and a variety of watersports and
fishing. With the exception of the rescue boat, no motor craft are
allowed on the lakes for safety and environmental reasons.
An information pack with details of local markets, fetes and places
of interest to visit will be available on arrival. A welcome food hamper
will also be provided.
