In the “7 Vallées” region,
a favourite country holiday area for the French themselves as well as
Belgian and Dutch holidaymakers, this is one of the two luxurious
cottages created in the former stable buildings of a typical regional "fermette"
The surrounding area with its pretty wooded valleys, trout streams, and
sleepy villages is just 1 hour from Calais, and just 40 minutes from the
endless beaches of the Cote d'Opale.
La Paquerette's light,
spacious interior offers 3 bedrooms: 1 wheelchair-accessible double on
the ground floor and 2 large twin rooms on the upper floor (1 with
additional convertible double). Two bathrooms, 2 separate WCs (1 of
each adapted for disabled users), kitchen/diner and spacious living
room, laundry, terrace, garden, parking.
Local shopping facilities
include the market towns of Fruges (3mins) and Hesdin (10 mins), where
The Wine Society has its French retail outlet. For more serious
shoppers St. Omer with its Auchan and Carrefour hypermarchés, stylish
boutiques, art and furniture galleries is only 25 minutes drive.
Antique lovers will find a treasure trove in Montreuil (25 mins)
including a weekly auction sale, while fashion junkies should make a
bee-line for Le Touquet (45 mins) with its branches of Paris boutiques,
smart cocktail bars and casinos.
History fans will not want
to miss the battlefields of Azincourt (3 mins) and Crecy (30 mins).
Azincourt, where, in 1415, the army of Henry V won the most famous
victory in English history, has a fine new museum dedicated to the
battle. Elsewhere, in particular close to Arras, Albert and Bapaume
(about 1 hr) there are some moving Great War 1914-18 battlefield
monuments and cemeteries. An outing to the monuments and preserved
trench lines at Beaumont Hamel, Vimy, Thiepval and Ypres is particularly
recommended, especially if your visit is around the time of Armistice
Day (November 11). Everywhere, historical sites and fine chateaux
abound.
Horse riding, tennis,
swimming, windsurfing, sand yachting and fishing all available at a
number of centres within 40 minutes drive. Walkers and cyclists will
find wide variety of signposted itineraries and you can even try a walk
in the country with a donkey for company.
If you play golf you will
love the choice of a dozen or so top quality courses within an hour's
comfortable drive. |
